Delhi has as many as 31,72,842 registered cars in the city.
The no. of registered vehicles in the Delhi has crossed 1 crore mark, that too amid the growing concerns over the poor traffic conditions & rising pollution levels in national capital.
Data from the transport dept. of Delhi govt. puts the total no. of registered vehicles at 1,05,67,712 till 25th May 2017.
Biggest chunk of these registered vehicles – 66,48,730 – in Delhi comprises of scooters & motor cycles that are known as the major air polluters due to their poor emission standards.
Other major categories of registered vehicles in the Capital include goods carriers – 2,25,438; motor cab – 1,18,424; moped – 1,16,092; passenger 3 wheelers – 1,06,082; goods three wheelers – 68,692; buses – 35,332; e-rickshaws – 31,555 & maxi cabs – 30,207; the data said.
Numerous reports suggest that vehicular pollution is 1 of the major contributors in polluting the air in the Delhi.
In recent audit study, EPCA i.e.Environmental Pollution – Prevention & Control, had also found that the National Capital has lakhs of vehicles plying without the mandatory ‘pollution under control’ certificate.
