Brace for Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata High Courts as Union Cabinet clears Bill for name change

Hurdle cleared with approval of High Courts (Alteration of Names) Bill, 2016 by Cabinet

On Tuesday the Union Cabinet approved the change of name of  Madras High Court, Bombay High Court and Calcutta High Court. The Alterations are to reflect in the official nomenclature of Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata, respectively.

Ravi Shankar Prasad, Telecom and IT Minister said that the  Name of the cities have been changed for a few years now, thus it is suitable to change the  names of their High Courts by the High Courts [Alteration of Names] Bill, 2016

Government in its official communication stated that at present, there is no Central Law under which proposal for change of names of these High Courts has been addressed, thus the new legislation will enable it.

The Government in its official statement stated that the High Courts [Alteration of Names] Bill, 2016 would facilitate the change of the names of the Bombay High Court to Mumbai High Court; the Madras High Court to Chennai High Court.
