Insecticides Act, 1968 is to be replaced with Pesticides Management Bill, 2008 to effectively tackle the issue of pesticide residues in food items.
Centre will ban use of 18 pesticides in India as it involves risk to the humans and animals.
Union Agriculture Ministry has issued a draft order, asking the manufacturers, the importers and the State Authorities to completely ban 12 of the identified pesticides from January 1, 2018 and remaining six from December 31, 2020.
These pesticides are banned or restricted in the other countries, they were still used in India. Some of these pesticides are highly toxic to honey bees and the birds.
Also use of these pesticides contaminates water bodies and thereby affects the aquatic organisms.
Decision to ban these pesticides is taken after considering recommendations of an Expert Committee constituted in 2013 headed by Anupama Varma, Former National Professor of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI).
The Committee, reviewed use of about 66 pesticides which are banned or restricted in many countries.
