CJI was addressing the gathering at the First Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer Memorial Lecture Series. In the times like today, it would have been difficult to recommend Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer’s elevation to the Supreme Court.
Moreso if one consider his early stint as a politician followed by a series of prosecutions, said the Chief Justice of India T.S. Thakur.
He was delivering his inaugural address at the First Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer Memorial Lecture Series yesterday.
He shared about a particular candidates whose chamber allotment was cancelled as it was found to be not in accordance with the rules. He … filed a petition in court to challenge the cancellation. Today even such a case is treated as an objections this candidate is in litigation.
CJI said that the job of appointing Judges has become tough over the years.
Today, if we had a J. Krishna Iyer-like candidate to consider, we would be very hesitant in recommending him for elevation.
CJI said that J. Krishna Iye was the first person who came from politics to judiciary.
But today to see a politician becoming a judge, that too of Supreme Court of India, is unimaginable in the present context.
Justice Iyer’s understanding of Constitutional ethos was unparalleled. He gave voice to the aspirations of the people.
He always found ways and means to ensure that justice was done within the parameters of the law.
