Congress activists slaughtered a calf in broad daylight, cooked its meat and distributed it.
On Sunday, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Sunday condemned public slaughter of a calf in Kerala by the Youth Congress workers and stated that party did not not support it.
“What happened in Kerala yesterday is thoughtless, barbaric and completely unacceptable to me and Congress Party. I strongly condemn the incident,” Rahul stated in a tweet.
On Friday, political parties in Kerala and their youth wings took out marches and organised the beef fests to protest against Centre’s decision to ban sale and purchase of the cattle from the animal markets for slaughter.
Beef is widely consumed in Kerala and Centre’s blanket ban on it has caused widespread outrage.
DYFI national president Mohammed Riyaz, who led the protest,”We will eat beef to show our protest against Central Government. We want to tell this to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi”.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan reproached government for imposing edict without consulting with the states first and called it an “intrusion” into rights of State.
But Saturday’s slaughter seems to have backfired on protesters, as the top politicians united across the party lines to criticise the act.
Police have registered case against the District President of Youth Congress and other Congress workers for slaughtering the calf.
