‘Don’t act like a Grandmother’: HC allows Udta Punjab Movie release with just one cut


Udta Punjab a drug-themed film will now be released with just one cut as per Bombay high court order.

The High Court Bench expounded that the Censor Board of India should  “stop acting like a Grandmother” in this matter which has in turn sparked a debate on creative freedom in Cinema.

The judgment has overturned the Censor Board’s order seeking 13 cuts to the movie.

High Court while passing the judgment, directed the producers to delete a scene where Shahid Kapoor is seen urinating in public. The court has further directed for the modification of a disclaimer clause by deleting the reference to Pakistan.

The judgment of Bench comprising Justices SC Dharmadhikari and Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi is being hailed by the film fraternity as a “landmark judgment”.

High Court of Bombay further expounded that the filmmakers must be permitted  to choose the backdrop for their movies,hence ruling that the censor board’s “exercise of power must not violate the constitutional guarantee of freedom of speech and expression”.

Udta Punjab is scheduled to be released on June 17,2016.
