First conviction recorded against absconding Businessman & MP Vijay Mallya

Businessman and MP on the run Vijay Mallya was on Wednesday convicted by a Hyderabad Criminal Court in a Cheque Dishonour case.

The District Court, had earlier issued a non-bailable warrant, NBWs, against him and has decided to pronounce the quantum of sentence to him on May 5.

This verdict of Conviction against MP Mallya came on cases filed by Complainant GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL).

GHIAL runs Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. It had filed criminal petitions in the different courts of Law seeking Mallya’s prosecution for defaulting on payments, dishonour of Cheques and cheating them by allegedly issuing several cheques that bounced on presentation.

In March this year, the Hyderabad City court had also issued four non-bailable warrants (NBWs) against Mallya after he failed to appear in the Court in connection with the complained dishonour of cheques amounting to about Rs 2 crore pauable to GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd.

Mallya is also facing numerous loan default and money laundering cases and is on the run. He left for UK just before CBI could have detained him for default of about Rs. 9,000 Crore.
