A total of 5,01,423 accidents happened last year against 4,89,400 in 2014.
In 2015 Road accidents were on the rise & claimed more than 1.46 lakh lives.
Besides this more than 5 lakh people were injured, the Parliament was informed this Monday.
India recorded 1,46,133 road accident related deaths & 5,00,279 injuries in year 2015.
This figure was 1,39,671 fatal accidents & 4,93,474 injuries in year 2014.
This data was presented by the Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways, Mansukh L Mandaviya as a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
Between 2011 & 2013, road accidents,deaths and injuries had a declining trend but again rose 2014 onwards.
According to UNESCAP (United Nations Economic & Social Commission for Asia & the Pacific) study, India’s GDP takes a 3% hit each year due to road accidents, that is in value terms equivalent to over USD 58 billion.
Nitin Gadkari, the Road Transport & Highways Minister has made bringing down of fatal road accidents as a major program of his ministry.
