Kanhaiya Granted conditional Interim Bail by Delhi High Court for 6 Months

kanhaiya-kumarMarch,2,2016: The Delhi high court on Wednesday granted bail for six months to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader Kanhaiya Kumar, who was arrested on charges of sedition on February 12.

Kumar was given interim bail on furnishing a personal bond of Rs 10,000. Bond is ordered to be furnished by JNU Faculty Member only.

Several conditions were imposed on him viz. not leaving Country, not participating in any Anti-National Activity directly or indirectly and cooperate in the Investigation.

Justice Pratibha Rani pronounced her order on Kumar’s bail plea, which she had reserved on Monday after hearing lengthy arguments from his lawyers and Delhi Police who had opposed his bail.

Kumar, JNU students’ union president, was arrested for allegedly raising anti-national slogans inside the campus during an event to mark the third anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru’s hanging on February 9.

Kumar’s counsels had during the earlier hearing alleged police acted hastily on a report by Zee News channel and further said that the videotape aired by the TV channel was doctored. Police, however, told the court they have eye-witness testimony and other documentary evidence of Kumar’s participation in the event.

Kumar’s arrest and subsequent events, including his alleged assault by lawyers in Delhi’s Patiala House court complex where he was produced after his arrest, have caused a furore throughout the country and students from various universities across India have joined in protest.
