Modi Govt. claims it to be a huge democratic decision.

From May 1, no VIPs or the dignitary including the President, PM, Chief Justice of India and the Chief Minister will be allowed to have the red beacon on their vehicles.

Red Beacons will be allowed only for the emergency vehicles and the enforcement agencies.

Media had on April 12 reported how ending the VIPs red beacon culture was there in the government’s agenda when Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) took the meeting.

Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari stated that, “People used to feel bad about the people in power and others using the red beacons on their vehicle. It’s a huge democratic decision.”

He further added that there were several instances of misuse of the beacons for show off. The decision would be notified after the public hearing.

Soon after Cabinet’s decision red beacons of the Gadkari’s official vehicles were removed.

Road transport ministry had forwarded three options to the PMO after holding consultations with the Senior Cabinet ministers and one of the options was to end use of red beacons.

Sources have informed that proposal was pending for more than one-and-a-half years.

Aam Aadmi Party Government in Delhi was first to withdraw use of red beacons by Ministers. Followed by more recently Amarinder Singh Government in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh Government led by Yogi Adityanath.
