He was conferred with Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award by the Government in the year 2007.
Former CJI P N Bhagwati passed away on Thursday. He was 95 years old. Justice Bhagwati is survived by his wife and three daughters.
According to the family sources, funeral will be held on Saturday.
Justice Bhagwati was appointed as the judge of Apex Court in 1973 and became 17th CJI in 1985.
He was architect of a new concept of the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) for the purpose of dispensing justice to voiceless poor on whose behalf a third person could approach the Supreme Court or High Courts.
Justice Bhagwati was part of five-judge bench which in the year 1976 delivered infamous ADM Jabalpur judgement that had upheld Government’s decision to suspend fundamental rights, including Right to Life, during the Emergency i.e 1975 to 1977.
Justice Bhagwati was part of five-judge bench which had delivered the landmark judgement wherein Apex Court expounded that Right to Life is no mere animal existence but it meant Right to Live with Dignity.
