SC issues notice to Google, Yahoo, Facebook and Microsoft to curb sharing of Rape videos

On Monday, Supreme Court sought response from the internet majors Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Facebook on a plea which seeking curbs on sharing of the sexual offence videos on the social networking sites and steps to check cyber crimes.

Apex Court Bench comprising of Justices M B Lokur and Justice U U Lalit has issued notice to these companies and sought their reply on this plea by January 9,2017.

Appearing on behalf of the petitioner NGO Prajwala, Advocate Aparna Bhatt, , stated that the rape videos are shot and posted on the the social networking sites and internet companies should take steps to curb such cyber crime.

Supreme Court Bench stated that if names of the sexual offenders are to be made public then it should be done only after conviction in the offence, not just after case is lodged as it would tarnish the image of the person, if he is acquitted in the case”.

Apex Court also directed Centre to include steps to curb sexual violence against the children in list of the measures to be taken for curbing crime against the women.

Supreme Court was hearing a letter sent to then Chief Justice of India H L Dattu by Hyderabad-based NGO Prajwala along with two rape videos in a pen drive. Apex Court had taken suo motu note of the letter on posting of these videos on ‘WhatsApp’ and had asked CBI to launch a probe forthwith to nab culprits.
