The closing ceremony of Delhi Commonwealth Games (CWG) took place about 7 years ago in October 2010. On paper though, the Commonwealth Games will close this month!

12 years after it was formed, the sports ministry, on the intervention of the Prime Minister’s Office, has decided to dissolve the CWG Organising Committee (OC). This decision was approved by the sports minister Vijay Goel on Friday & a month’s notice has been issued to the Organising Committee staff.

This committee, which employs 19 people including a CEO, is facing forty two cases of outstanding payments of approximately ₹700 crore. This liability’ll now shift to the govt. & govt. is likely to form an OC cell within the sports ministry to monitor these 42 cases. Roughly 5 of these cases are worth ₹50-60 crore each.

Key reasons for disbanding the OC is its high operational cost. Last year, sources said the govt. spent ₹2.25 crore to pay salaries of its staff. Other major expenses included- housekeeping (₹45 lakh), vehicles (₹30 lakh), security (₹25 lakh) & telephone (₹16 lakh). However, the govt. spent most on legal fees, which amounted to ₹4.65 crore.
