It is for the first time in the History of Indian Judiciary that Arrest Warrants were issued against a sitting High Court Judge.
On Friday, in an unprecedented decision, Supreme Court issued bailable warrant against sitting judge of Calcutta High Court Justice C S Karnan.
He had refused to abide by SC’s order to be personally present before it in a contempt proceeding against him.
A seven judge Bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar expounded that bench is left with no option but to issue the warrant against Justice Karnan to ensure his presence in court to face the contempt charges.
He had made baseless allegations against retired and sitting judges of Supreme Court and the Madras high court.
