Supreme Court questions Centre: Why is Aadhaar card mandatory for getting PAN card?

Supreme Court has asked Centre why it made Aadhaar card mandatory for getting PAN card when Apex Court has passed an order saying it could not do that.

In May,2017 , Apex Court did state that Government wouldn’t be wrong to make the Aadhaar mandatory for opening bank account, getting mobile connections and for getting passports.

But among those things, SC did not include getting PAN cards or getting the other welfare benefits.

Attorney General, on behalf of Central Government submitted before Supreme Court that,”Making Aadhaar compulsory is its “only option” because number of PAN cards are being used to divert funds to the shell companies. To prevent this only option is to make the Aadhaar card mandatory .
