Supreme Court today used very harsh words for Central Govt. blaming it for Judicial appointments stalemate.

Apex Court has pulled up the Centre for continuously dragging its feet on the issue of appointment of High Court Judges, accusing the Government that is it trying to shut down the Judiciary down.

It is pertinent to note that till date, the Centre Govt. has cleared only 18 out of 77 names recommended by the SC Collegium for appointment at different High Court.

Fuming over the issue Apex court threatened to summon PMO secretary over this delay.

The Centre on its part sought time till November 11 to clear more names.

SC remarked that it seems you want to lock out the judiciary. How can state high courts function with less than 60 per cent of their actual strength.

The bench noted that the institution of Judiciary can not be allowed to be decimated like this.

While the Centre on its part argued that pending MoP for the appointment of judges is hindering the process. It was dismissed by the Bench as it could not be the ground for stalling the process as the Centre had itself earlier agreed to continue with the old procedure of appointment.

The bench observed that there was a time when Judiciary had more judges and less court room.

Today many High court rooms are locked because of non-appointment if Judges.
