Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti and a Parliamentary Standing Committee in the past, too have stated on Water Resources the need for bringing this subject in the Concurrent List.

Irrigation, canal,  water supplies, embankments, drainage and and storage fall in the state list.

On September 5, the Apex Court ordered Karnataka to release 15,000 cusecs of water of Cauvery river everyday to Tamil Nadu for next 10 days for betterment of plight of the farmers there.

A bench comprising Justice Dipak Misra and Justice U. Lalit directed Karnataka to ensure supply of water to Tamil Nadu, taking into consideration that samba crops in Tamil Nadu would get badly affected
